EGAT invests Baht 1.6 billion for a wind power development project

EGAT celebrated the start of construction of Lam Takhong Wind Turbine Phase 2. The project supports the electricity generation from renewable energy and balances fuel use. Fuel cell technology will also be utilized to enhance energy storage capacity, supplying electric power any time, which complies with Energy 4.0 policy of Minister of Energy.

Mr. Supachai Pitasuwan said, “Lam Takhong Wind Turbine Phase 2 is another development project of wind power in the area of Lam Takhong which has wind power potential. The project will be added to the existing 2 wind turbines with the total capacity of 2.5 MW. In the site of Lamtakong Jolabha Wattana Hydropower Plant, there is also a pump storage system, representing that EGAT is determined to generate more electricity from renewable power and balance the fuel use. Besides, a learning center on power is being constructed, and it will become a tourist attraction in the northeastern region in the future.

Lam Takhong Wind Turbine Phase 2 is comprised of 12 wind turbines with the total capacity of 24 MW, or 2 MW each. Each turbine is 94 meters high with the diameter of 116 meters, and the budget for the project costs Baht 1,407 million. A technology, wind hydrogen hybrid, will store electricity generated from wind power in the form of hydrogen before converted into electricity when needed. Together with fuel cell system costing Baht 234 million, the storage system of electric power from renewable energy is enhanced. The stored power will be supplied to the learning center in the same area as well. The project responses to Ministry of Energy’s Energy 4.0 Policy in the way that it increases a share of renewable energy and uses innovations and technology to improve efficiency of power generation from renewable power. It will be completed and ready for commercial operation by 2017.
