Self employed workforce to get state welfare

The government yesterday announced special welfare and benefit for self employed workforce to mark the upcoming National Labour Day on May 1.

It hopes such welfare will help to pursuade self employed workers to participate in the government social welfare scheme.

Labour Minister Gen Sirichai Distakul revealed that the cabinet gave its approval for proposals to improve the welfare of unofficial workforce which includes self employed workers such as hawkers, peddlers, taxi drivers and motorcycle taxi riders.

He said the government sees this move as a special gift for workers on Labor Day which falls on May 1.

On the whole, the proposal involves substantial increases in disability payments in the event of loss of income due to injury or illness to 300 baht/day under the proviso that they are hospitalized.

Also special 3,000 baht subsidies in the event to death will also be granted on top of the 40,000 baht funeral expenses.

Furthermore, 1,000 baht/month elderly bonus welfare payments will be paid to elderly workers if they participate in making small monthly deductions for at least 180 months. The latter is to promote more self employed workers to participate in national social welfare programs under Article 40 of the Constitution.

He said the government expected that for the first year alone at least 3 million workers will apply and a target of 20 million applicants within 20 years. This will mean that on the whole the national budget will have to shoulder and additional 3 billion baht yearly.
