THAILAND: NO INJURIES IN PATTANI CAR BOMB EXPLOSION

PATTANI, Thailand Aug 17 (NNN-Bernama) � A pick-up truck exploded in front of the Mayo district police station staff quarters, here, early today but no one was injured in the incident, said a local security official.

The source said the 4am incident had resulted in minor damage to the houses.

The vehicle, which was fitted with a bomb, was one of the five pick-up trucks that were stolen by a group of armed men from a used-vehicle showroom in Songkhla yesterday, the source said.

The source also said that one of the policemen patrolling the area saw the vehicle being parked next to the police station which was opposite the police quarters.

He also saw the driver leaving the pick-up truck before it exploded shortly after, the source added.

Yesterday, seven heavily armed men stormed the showroom, held up four employees and escaped with five pick-up trucks in Kuan Mark, Songkhla.

Two of the vehicles were fitted with bombs but one of them, carrying 60 kg of explosives, was destroyed by security forces after a gunfight in Nongchik here, in which one of the armed men was killed.

The other vehicle, fitted with 80 kg of explosives, blew up by a roadside in Nongchik, wounding four soldiers.

Thai police chief, Gen Chaktip Chaijinda visited Pattani yesterday to check out the situation.
