Bangkok: Anucha Burapachaisri, the Democrat Party's prospective candidate for Bangkok Governor, has called for urgent action to address issues surrounding cannabis legalization and urban infrastructure in Sukhumvit. He emphasized the need for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to regulate cannabis shops and advertising, aiming to enhance Bangkok's image as a "City of Angels."
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anucha, accompanied by party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and other key party members, surveyed Sukhumvit Soi 4 and the sidewalks along Sukhumvit Soi 5-11. The visit aimed to assess economic and tourism conditions while addressing the proliferation of cannabis advertisements and sales outlets in the area.
Mr. Anucha highlighted Sukhumvit as a vital economic and tourist hub, identifying cannabis advertising as a pressing issue. The Democrat Party supports cannabis for medical use but insists on strict controls for recreational use to protect youth from harmful influences. He urged the BMA to inspect risky advertising, regulate shop locations near schools and temples, and address nuisances like odors and unsanitary conditions.
Beyond the BMA's immediate jurisdiction, Mr. Anucha called for the administration to act as the main coordinator with relevant ministries to enforce cannabis-related laws. He also stressed the importance of infrastructure preparedness, advocating for proactive measures in drainage, sluice gates, and emergency equipment readiness at the district level.
In response to public sentiment, Mr. Anucha noted increased awareness and a growing desire among Bangkok residents to vote, reflecting hopes for a better Bangkok. He emphasized the Democrat Party's readiness, backed by experienced leaders and local candidates, to implement policies for the city's benefit.
