KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Train driver Saravan Subramaniam, whose heroic act helped prevent a train derailment tragedy involving the MRT Purple Line Bangkok in Thailand last year, has been named the Prasarana Group’s greatest staff for 2017.

In a statement here today, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad said Saravanan, who is also the recipient of Land Public Transport Commission’s (SPAD) Special Award for Rail Staff at the Industry Award ceremony last October, defeated four other finalists to win the the Prasarana Employee Appreciation and Recognition for Life (PEARL) Award in the Public Commendation category at the ceremony held at the Putra World Trade Centre last Friday.

Relating the incident in March 2016, Saravanan said he was on a temporary attachment with the MRT Bangkok Purple Line service and was driving the train, which was on its Testing & Commissioning phase, when he felt that there was something wrong with the train movement and quickly stopped the train or further inspection.

His quick action had indeed avoid a train derailment as inspections confirmed that the train had suffered major technical problem.

Meanwhile, Prasarana’s team responsible for developing the special Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Southern Line (MMMSL) Hiring & Webinar Cloud Hosting to facilitate the recruitment and management of staff online received the award in the Compliance of Prasarana Noble Values category.

Eight members of the team were Nurul Haszeli Ahmad, Mohd Nizar Abd Azik, Hazrul Nizzam Sidek, Mohd Abdul Hanan, Suhaimi Maidin, Anuar Mustafa, Muhammad Nor Hafiz Yaacob, Shek Mohd Fahmi and the late Amiza Abdul Aziz, who died in Makkah prior to the commencement of the MMMSL this year.

During the ceremony, Prasarana also presented token of appreciation to its retirees and prizes for the winners of the various Innovative and Creative Circle contests held locally and abroad.
