The Cabinet has approved a budget of 321.6 million baht from the 2021 national budget to buy 500,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine from Sinovac Biotech, so that the people in Thailand can have equitable access to vaccination against COVID-19.
Out of the budget, 290.24 million baht will be paid for the vaccine and 31.26 million baht for area-based preparations and arrangements. The project will be carried out by the Department of Disease Control in May 2021.
It aims to reduce the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths, as well as reducing the spread of the disease and maintaining the country’s public health security. The project is also intended to reduce medical costs from taking care of COVID-19 patients and to bring about quick economic and social recovery.
As the number of infected persons has continued to increase, following the new wave of local transmission of COVID-19 from April 2021 onwards, the Government deems it urgent to acquire more vaccine for people at high risk from the disease.
The Cabinet also approved criteria and conditions concerning costs for emergency COVID-19 cases. The costs will also cover transportation to transfer patients, personal protective equipment, and cleaning and disinfection of vehicles.
Moreover, the Cabinet agreed to extend the exemption of import duty for equipment, medicines, and vaccines against COVID-19 as a special case until March 2022.
