EGAT's Mae Moh mine wins Green Mining Awards 2016 due to its eco-friendly mining and social responsibility

          Mae Moh mine was awarded Green Mining Awards 2016 in the categories of coal mine and limestone mine reflecting its environmentally friendly mining, social responsibility and life quality improvement for the community.

          On January 30, 2017, Mr. Pornchai Trakulwaranon, Vice Minister for Ministry of Industry, chaired Green Mining Awards 2016 at Grand Ballroom, Emerald Hotel, Ratchada, Bangkok. In this event, Mr. Thaworn Ngamganokwan, Deputy Governor – Fuel and Mr. Prajuab Donmoonkum, Assistant Director of Mae Moh Mine Planning and Administration Division representing EGAT Governor received the awards in the categories of eco-friendly mining (coal mine and limestone mine). In this year, the total of 103 organizations were awarded. Various lectures are also provided with the aim to improve the standard of mining industry towards “Green Mine”.

          Mr. Thaworn said that Mae Moh mine is essential to the country because it is the country’s main coal-fired power plant. The fuel is cheap and its power generation process provides the by-products, namely fly ash and gypsum used as the raw material for cement production. Moreover, Mae Moh mine is the energy hub that receives electricity from Hongsa power plant in Laos, to distribute it throughout Northeastern and Central Thailand. Additionally, Mae Moh mine is a large source of employment benefiting the public. With its power development fund, money flows within the province. Mah Moh mine is also the Learning Center and sustainable tourist attraction.

          At present, the Department of Primary Industries and Mine, Ministry of Industry has managed mineral resources in a more proactive way by encouraging high standard and environmentally friendly production as well as social responsibility. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s initiatives on reforestation, water and soil conservation, and supporting the quality of life of citizens have been implemented to improve basic industries and mining businesses.

          Mae Moh mine has important practical Green Mining standards including 1). Operate with environmental and social responsibility 2). Prevent and reduce environmental impact 3.) Provide safety and healthcare for workers and community 4). Preserve green area 5). Be transparent 6). Manage resource efficiently. All of these make Mae Moh mine win the awards in the categories of sustainability of limestone mine for third consecutive years and coal mine for two consecutive years.
