Today, it will mark a historic moment for the people of the Kingdom of Thailand when at 1.00 pm they will join together in a sing-along of the Royal Anthem at the Sanam Luang field in front of the Grand Palace.
They will sing together to send their beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej to heaven.
Leading the mass of people to sing the Royal Anthem is Ajarn Somtow Sucharitkul.
According to Ajarn Somtow, the significance of today’s event is that it vividly represents the Thai people’s love and sense of loss for their beloved ‘Royal Father’.
He said this event could be the largest mass sing-along in the world and he would be proud to be a part of it.
Rarely have so many people been involved in such an event, he said.
On top of the rarely seen spectacle of hundreds of thousands of people singing in unison, a large team of choral singers numbering 150 and more than 200 musicians from the Siam Philharmonic Orchestra will make for a staggering show that has rarely been seen anywhere, he said.
Ajarn Somtow said he himself has made a new arrangement for the Royal Anthem so that modern instruments such as the Tuba can be part of the accompaniment.
This will make for a very detailed and intricate performance to honor His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, he said.
Many are worried that the musicians in the Siam Philharmonic Orchestra might be out of their depth seeing as they have never performed in such a large open space such as the Sanam Luang field while leading such a massive group of singers.
But he said eventually it was decided to give the musicians and the Thai people the benefit of the doubt and have faith that our united desire to pay the greatest tribute possible to a great King will see us though.
My only concern is the musical coverage. People who are some distance away might find it difficult to hear the orchestra and could possibly be singing off-key. But after some thought I recognized that the Thai people will be united in their grief and their desire to pay the greatest tribute to our beloved King will overcome any difficulties.
Today’s event will be a historic and momentous occasion for Thailand.
It is an entire nation’s grief and sorrow at the inconceivable loss of their beloved monarch who’s every thought was of them and their welfare.
It is possibly the greatest homage that a nation can pay to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej who is and will always be the greatest King for the Thai people.
