The fisheries and marine departments have been told by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives to speed up identification and certification of the remaining 2,000 fishing vessels within May 13.
Agriculture Minister Chatchai Sarikalya said that the identification and certification of fishing vessels was a required process under the illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) rule of the European Union.
For instance, he said the actual size of a fishing boat must match with the size stated in the registration, failing that the fishing gears will have to be changed and the perating days of the boat in question will have to be reduced if it was discovered that the actual size of the boat is bigger than stated.
Thailand is confident that after May 13, fishing restrictions imposed by the EU will be lifted.
