Paris: The Prime Minister of Thailand is actively pursuing the recognition of "Thai traditional dress" as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. In a significant meeting at the UNESCO headquarters, Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Thailand's Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, engaged in discussions with Mr. Khaled Ahmed El-Enany Ali Ezz, the Director-General of UNESCO, to push forward this cultural initiative.

According to Thai News Agency, the discussions took place today at 3:00 PM local time in France. The meeting was a follow-up to the Director-General's earlier visit to Thailand on May 15, 2026. During this exchange, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the invitation to visit UNESCO and emphasized the strong partnership between Thailand and the organization.

The Director-General commended Thailand's expanding cooperation with UNESCO, acknowledging the efforts made by both the government and the private sector, particularly in the realm of sustainable tourism. He highlighted Thailand's commitment to balancing economic growth with the preservation of cultural heritage and natural resources.

The Thai Prime Minister's spokesperson revealed that the discussions covered several key areas of cooperation. In sustainable tourism, Thailand aims to further enhance its collaboration with UNESCO to ensure a harmonious balance between development and conservation. Thailand currently boasts eight World Heritage Sites and is advocating for Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan to be recognized as the ninth site at the upcoming World Heritage Committee session in Korea.

A primary focus of the meeting was the promotion of Thai traditional dress. The Prime Minister emphasized its significance as a representation of Thai knowledge, craftsmanship, and cultural identity. The initiative also honors Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's efforts in promoting Thai textiles globally. The recognition of Thai traditional dress as an intangible cultural heritage would elevate global awareness of Thailand's rich cultural legacy.

Concluding the meeting, both parties discussed hosting a Global Education Meeting in 2027, reinforcing their commitment to advancing collaboration in education, science, culture, and sustainable development.
