New delhi: Hundreds of fish have died in a lake in India. Severe heat and a subsequent water shortage have killed hundreds of fish in a lake in India's capital. On Friday, officials rushed to collect the dead fish floating on the surface of Sanjaya Lake as temperatures in New Delhi soared to 40 degrees Celsius.
According to Thai News Agency, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued heatwave warnings in northern and central states after high temperatures of 40-47 degrees Celsius were recorded in the past 24 hours. Large areas of the subcontinent are experiencing above-average heatwave days in May, a result of the El Ni±o phenomenon, which has increased demand for naturally cooling water.
Past weather-related illnesses and deaths in India show that between March and June of last year, more than 7,000 suspected cases of heatstroke and 14 deaths were reported. In the same period of 2024, the number of suspected heatstroke cases reached 40,000, with 110 deaths.
