ADDIS ABABA, Leaders of a number of food companies from Thailand, who are members of a visiting Thai business mission now in Ethiopia, have expressed to invest in this country and are seeking local partners to participate in the expanding agro-processing industry sector here.
The business mission is made up representatives from more than 35 Thai companies drawn from food, auto spare parts manufacturing and construction industries who are taking part in an Ethiopia-Thailand business forum which began in Addis Ababa Wednesday.
Suree Interfoods Company’s Regional Sales Manager, Bilma Picadizo, said the company is exploring the possibility of promoting its products in Ethiopia. I am looking forward to meeting a business partner that is engaged in food like ours, she added.
Stating that her company wants to foster partnerships in promoting its products, Vilma pointed out that after learning the demands of our products we want to engage in manufacturing them here in the future.
She urged the governments of Ethiopia and Thailand to further accelerate business forums which can help boost trade and investment flows.
A Variety Foods International Company representative, Tantida Ngamnitiporn, said her company would like to start its business in Ethiopia by finding companies which can distribute its products and later proceed to manufacture them here.
Ethiopia has a population of almost 100 million and 70 per cent of them are in the productive age group under the age of 30, she noted.
According to Tantida, the large number of Chinese citizens in Ethiopia can also be a huge opportunity to tap as the food products of the company are similar to Chinese.
FBBV Worldwide chief executive officer Prasert Kanmotharn said his company is interested in engaging in the potential market and fast growing economy of Ethiopia. “Since this is our first time here, we would like to meet partners who can jointly work with us; and we hope this will grow in the future.
The three Thai companies produce jelly sauce, coconut milk, biscuits, corn snacks, wafers, coconut energy drinks, and coconut water.
The relationship between Ethiopia and Thailand has flourished since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1960, and distinct measures have been taken to further strengthen co-operation in health and investment.
