SUNGAI GOLOK, A 35-year-old Malaysian woman was arrested by the Thai police in Sungai Golok, near Malaysian state of Kelantan, in connection with a transborder human trafficking syndicate.
Ninth Division deputy police chief Major General Daoloi Muendech said the woman, known as Kakak (sister) among residents in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, was arrested a few days after she crossed over to Sungai Golok without any documents.
He said the woman was believed to be the account holder of a cross-border human trafficking syndicate.
Investigations found that the woman know the Malaysian leader of the human trafficking syndicate. She is tasked to find individuals to open a bank account and is paid RM250, he said when met here yesterday.
He said a court in Songkla had issued an arrest warrant against the woman last August, also for a human trafficking case, involving victims below the age of 18.
The woman admitted to having entered Sungai Golok frequently to make payments of between 50,000 Baht (RM6,250) and 150,000 Baht (RM18,750) to members of the syndicate residing in Chumphon and Ranong, in south Thailand, he added.
