House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez on Friday threatened to file impeachment complaint against Vice President Maria Leonor Leni Robredo whom he accused of undermining President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration before the international community
Alvarez claimed that Robredo had betrayed public trust by maligning the Duterte government, citing Robredo’s message before a United Nations meeting on illegal drugs in Vienna on March 16 where she spoke out against Duterte’s anti-drug war and the so-called palit-ulo scheme wherein the police would take a member of the family of a drug suspect without a warrant if the suspect didn’t want to surrender.
In my lifetime, this is only time that a high-ranking government official brazenly maligned our country before the international community. What will be its economic effects? said Alvarez.
Reacting to Alvarez’s threat, Representative Gary Alejano of Magdalo party-list said filing an impeachment complaint against Robredo because of her speech before the UN was a clear indication of the administration’s rejection of criticisms a mark of a dictator.
Rebredo’s camp refuged Alvarez’s claim, saying Robredo does not want to involve herself in any impeachment bid.
