Police, health officials and military personnel arrested a woman in a raid of an illegal dental clinic operating in the guise of a grocery in Muang district of Trang province on Saturday.
The woman, identified as Mrs Payom Jeh Lek Jaiyai, 51, reportedly told the officials that she learned the technique of orthodontic treatment of dental braces on the internet and has been operating the clinic for five years.
The combined team of police from the consumer’s protection unit, provincial health officials and military personnel raided the grocery on Phatthalung road, Tambon Tabtiang, after they found out that it was a front for an illegal dental clinic.
A search of the illegal clinic uncovered 24 items of devices in orthodontic treatment, including substandard dental braces which, said the officials, are not strong for teeth aligning and may loosen and fall through the throat.
Three charges were filed against Mrs Payom, which include selling goods which are prohibited by the Consumers’ Protection Committee, operating a medical clinic without a license and performing dental practice without a permission.
Authorities said they believe that are five similar clinics in Trang and they are gathering information to act against them.
