HANOI, Vietnam Football fans in Vietnam can breathe a sigh of relief after it was announced that World Cup matches will be broadcasted live on local television, the Vietnam News reported.
Vietnam Television (VTV) has signed an agreement to showcase the tournament which kicks off in Russia next Thursday.
Infront Sports and Media wanted about US$14 million for the rights to show the live matches but the price was deemed too high and after lengthy negotiations, a deal was struck.
The amount paid by VTV has not been revealed, but it is understood to be more than the US$7 million paid to show the 2014 World Cup matches in Brazil.
The competition begins on Thursday and runs for one month with the final being played on July 15 in Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium and will be shown on television in Vietnam at 10pm.
Other games kick-off local time at 5pm, 7pm, 10pm and 11pm.
