Yingluck’s 10 tonnes of rice sold out in one hour

A lot of people showed up at the parking lot of Fashion Island shopping mall in Bangkok on Saturday to buy Hom Mali rice put on sale at 20 baht/kg by former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her former Pheu Thai MPs.

Ten tonnes of rice which the Pheu Tha members claimed to have bought from farmers in Ubon Ratchathani and Surin provinces on Thursday were sold out in just one hour.

As soon as Ms Yingluck arrived at the parking lot, many people who had been waiting there clapped their hands and cheered. Several asked to be photographed with her.

Ms Yingluck told the media that she bought the rice from the farmers in order to help ease their hardship as a private citizen without any hidden agenda.

Let time to prove my sincerity, she said as she pleaded with her opponents not to suspect her motive or to accuse her.

She went on saying that the incumbent government’s scheme to extend credit to farmers to delay their sale of rice was not different from her government’s rice pledging scheme that is both were not intended to make profits but to help the rice farmers.
