12th Nong Jap Tao Khao Chi Chan Lantern Festival Illuminates Sattahip

Sattahip: The 12th Nong Jap Tao Khao Chi Chan Lantern Festival, a celebration of cultural heritage featuring lanterns and traditional performances, commenced last night in Sattahip District, Chonburi Province. This event, aimed at preserving local arts and traditions, will culminate in a grand Khon performance titled "The Battle of Ten Generals and Ten Chariots" tonight.

According to Thai News Agency, the festival was inaugurated at the ceremonial grounds in front of the Khao Chi Chan cliff-carved Buddha image. The event drew a large gathering of Buddhists and tourists, many adorned in traditional Thai attire. A key feature of the festivities was a parade and lantern competition, with communities across Chonburi Province showcasing intricately crafted lanterns as offerings to the relics enshrined within the Phra Phuttha Maha Vajira Uttamopas Sasada Buddha image.

The festival's opening night included an outdoor Khon performance of "Hanuman Offering the Ring" by Chanthaburi College of Dramatic Arts students. Tonight's highlight will be another Khon performance, staged against the backdrop of the Khao Chi Chan cliff. Rear Admiral Pongsak Phureeroj emphasized the significance of the Maravijaya Buddha image, noting its creation using laser technology on the cliff face, standing 130 meters tall with a lap width of 70 meters. The image was created in tribute to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and is regarded as a sacred national site.

Chonburi Province extends an invitation to tourists and the public to experience this unique blend of faith, art, and culture at Khao Chi Chan, Sattahip District, until tonight, starting at 5:00 PM. Admission is free.
