Bangkok and Eastern Thailand Brace for PM2.5 Surge Due to Transboundary Dust

Bangkok: The Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) has issued a warning for Bangkok, its surrounding areas, and eastern Thailand about a potential rise in PM2.5 levels expected on February 11-12, 2026, due to transboundary dust.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, has disclosed that the Air Pollution Control Communication Center (APCC) of the Pollution Control Department has predicted an increase in PM2.5 levels in Bangkok, its neighboring provinces, and the eastern region, particularly in Sa Kaeo, Prachinburi, and Chachoengsao provinces, during this period.

The deputy spokesperson explained that the easterly winds blowing from nearby countries are the primary cause, placing Bangkok and its surrounding areas in the direct path of these winds. Additionally, a significant number of hotspots, totaling 4,462, were identified in Cambodia, marking the highest count since the season commenced. This figure is expected to rise, potentially exacerbating the air pollution situation in Thailand.

The Pollution Control Department has called for cooperation from all relevant agencies in the eastern region and associated organizations to enhance supervision of pollution sources, especially concerning open burning, to mitigate impacts on air quality.

Ms. Periswiwatana further mentioned that the National Energy Policy Council (NEPC) advises the public to prioritize their health by avoiding outdoor activities and wearing protective face masks when necessary. They are urged to adhere to recommendations issued by the Ministry of Public Health. Continuous air quality monitoring is available through the Air4Thai website and application, enabling the public to plan accordingly during this period of elevated air pollution.
