IPCC Unveils AR7 Roadmap to Tackle Global Climate Crises

Bangkok: The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), successfully co-hosted the 64th Session of the IPCC. This significant event focused on developing the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) roadmap to provide a scientific foundation for addressing global climate challenges.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok brought together scientists, climate experts, and government representatives from 138 countries. The primary goal was to outline the framework and scope of AR7, serving as a critical guide for tackling climate change and implementing policies to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions this decade. AR7 will enhance the scientific understanding of climate change causes, impacts, risks, and mitigation options. It will also offer guidance on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies (CBDs), Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), inventory guidelines for short-lived atmospheric pollutants, and a review of projects and funding under the IPCC Trust Fund.

Dr. Raveewan Phuridej, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, expressed her delight in co-hosting this pivotal global meeting. She welcomed IPCC executives, representatives from international organizations, and scientists from around the world. Emphasizing the urgent challenges posed by the escalating climate crisis, Dr. Phuridej highlighted the importance of linking scientific knowledge with practical implementation, particularly in support of the Paris Agreement. Thailand aims to accelerate its goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, promote the Climate Change Act, and establish a carbon credit market, among other initiatives. These efforts underscore Thailand’s commitment to a low-carbon economy and a sustainable global society.

Professor Jim Skea, President of the IPCC, expressed gratitude to the Department of Climate Change and Environment and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand for co-organizing the meeting. He highlighted that the IPCC report offers a deeper understanding of climate science, advancing global efforts to address climate change and strengthening global climate governance.
