Southern Unrest: Shooting and Car Bombings in Narathiwat and Pattani, Many Dead

Narathiwat: Southern border in chaos, more than 10 perpetrators opened fire and detonated a car bomb in front of the Su-ngai Kolok District Office, killing 2 and injuring more than 10. In Pattani, perpetrators planted a bomb in Sai Buri District, killing 3.

According to Thai News Agency, last night at 7:10 PM, in front of the Su-ngai Kolok District Office in Narathiwat Province, over 10 armed perpetrators attacked, resulting in 2 deaths and more than 10 injuries. CCTV footage captured the armed individuals arriving in a pickup truck and a sedan, launching an attack on the Su-ngai Kolok Volunteer Defense Corps officers. They fired upon the officers, planted a car bomb, and fled the scene following the explosion.

The attack prompted a swift response from local security forces, who coordinated with police, military, and rescue workers to assist and transport the injured to Su-ngai Kolok Hospital. Among the casualties were two volunteer defense officers, Sergeant Major Muhammad Sabri Nasawan and Sergeant Major Thotsapol Paipim, while nine other officers and two civilians were injured.

Simultaneously, another bombing attempt occurred in front of Charan Garage, where a picnic gas tank was used to cause unrest, injuring one person and damaging property. Authorities have secured the area for further inspection.

Additionally, an incident in Su-ngai Padi District involved a bomb planted at an electric pole, causing its collapse. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Authorities have cordoned off the area for investigation.

In Sai Buri District, Pattani Province, a bomb attack at a pavilion near Ban Hu Taek Alae intersection resulted in the deaths of a ranger and two assistant village headmen. The deceased were identified as Lt. Col. Samai Bunyong, Assistant Lt. Col. Maromlee Mayadeng, and Assistant Lt. Col. Adisorn Doloh. Another officer, Assistant Lt. Col. Harong Yelae, sustained an arm injury.

The aftermath of these incidents has led to heightened security measures. This morning, officials continue to monitor and secure the affected areas. The commander of the 4th Army Region and the commander of the 9th Provincial Police Region are expected to visit the scene for further evaluation.
