Weerayuth Awaits Party’s General Assembly Decision on Leadership

Bangkok: "Weerayuth" has expressed his intention to wait for the People's Democratic Party's general assembly to decide on the party leader. He has emphasized the importance of addressing "political turncoats" with the harshest penalties, as the party contemplates shelving these individuals to prevent them from switching allegiances. Weerayuth has refrained from answering questions about potentially accepting the party leader position, urging patience until the assembly's decision at the end of April.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Veerayut Kanchuchat, a party-list Member of Parliament (MP) and deputy leader of the People's Party, commented on actions being taken against Mr. Suriya Wongaree, the People's Party MP for Udon Thani Constituency 7. Suriya's vote against the party's stance for the Prime Minister has prompted the party to consider measures that would be most detrimental to him, drawing lessons from past experiences.

Mr. Veerayut emphasized that expulsion is not always the most beneficial course of action, as it may contribute to the "snake sucking snake" phenomenon, where expelled members simply relocate. Therefore, he stressed the need for a genuine and effective punishment, while requesting time for the parliamentary meeting to conclude on the appropriate measure.

Currently, Mr. Suriya has not contacted the party for clarification. Efforts are underway to reach him, and the gathered information will be presented at the MPs' meeting to finalize the appropriate measures.

Regarding rumors of a party revamp, with Mr. Veerayuth potentially becoming the party leader and Mr. Natthapong Ruangpanyawut transitioning to the role of secretary-general, Mr. Veerayuth stated that decisions regarding executive positions will be made at the party's general assembly at the end of April. This meeting, which is held annually, will approve the appointment of the party's executive committee. He requested patience, indicating that he could not comment on the matter ahead of time.

When asked if he would be prepared to lead the party and act as the leader of the opposition in the House of Representatives if appointed, Mr. Veerayuth responded with a smile, "Let's wait and see when that time comes."
