Bangkok: Officials have initiated a rescue operation at the Orange Line electric train project construction site, located between Soi Lan Luang 6 and Soi Lan Luang 8 in the Khlong Maha Nak Subdistrict, Pom Prap Sattru Phai District. The operation began after a worker fell into a hole at the site. To address the situation, compressed air was introduced into the hole to ensure the safety of the rescuers before they could descend to commence the search.
According to Thai News Agency, the rescue team has reached a depth of 9 meters and is preparing to send members to survey by hand due to concerns regarding the structural integrity of nearby buildings. The team is avoiding the use of heavy machinery beyond a 10-meter depth, as vibrations could pose a risk. The low oxygen levels initially prevented the team from descending, necessitating the injection of air to make it safe for the rescuers. It is anticipated that the team will begin their descent by 8:00 p.m., with only two personnel allowed in the hole at any given time for safety reasons, and each descent is limited to 15 minutes.
At 8:00 p.m., further preparations included the use of drilling equipment and the application of bentonite, which aids in controlling water flow and preventing soil erosion. This chemical increases soil viscosity, reducing the risk of subsidence during the operation.
Rescue efforts have been ongoing throughout the night, with the team estimating that the missing worker is trapped at a depth of around 16 meters. Beyond this point, a hard soil layer is expected, reducing the likelihood of further subsidence. If the operation proceeds smoothly, the team anticipates recovering the worker’s body by 6:00 a.m. the following day.
