Bank of Thailand Reassures Public on Security of Facial Recognition Systems

Bangkok: The Bank of Thailand (BOT) has clarified that Chinese scammers are using AI to create identity verification videos only with Chinese apps, not in Thailand. The BOT emphasized the security of facial recognition systems used by commercial banks in Thailand, which have strict measures in place to prevent counterfeiting using images or videos.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Darunee Saeju, Assistant Governor, Payment Systems Supervision and Financial Consumer Protection Group, Bank of Thailand (BOT), revealed that police arrested four Chinese individuals who used AI to create fake video clips from still images of victims. These clips were intended to deceive the bank’s identity verification system.

The investigation revealed that this was a case of a Chinese scammer testing an identity verification system using only Chinese data and applications, not Thai ones. The incident has raised concerns about the security of identity verification systems worldwide.

The BOT reassured that facial recognition systems used by Thai commercial banks have strict measures in place to prevent image or video forgery. Each bank employs its own detection techniques, which are rigorously tested for accuracy and security against various types of attacks before being implemented.
