Bangkok: China and Thailand have announced the establishment of a collaborative AI-powered laboratory designed to enhance disaster prediction and early warning systems. The China Central Meteorological Administration declared the opening of the China-Thailand joint laboratory, which aims to bolster meteorological support for cross-border projects spanning energy, agriculture, and infrastructure.
According to Thai News Agency, this initiative marks the world's first bilateral cooperation laboratory focused on artificial intelligence-driven meteorological applications. It is set to develop intelligent early warning technologies to alert about specific disasters such as typhoons, heavy rainfall, high temperatures, and drought.
The research team at the joint laboratory consists of over 40 experts specializing in atmospheric science, artificial intelligence, energy systems, agricultural meteorology, and cross-border regional collaboration. They will primarily utilize China's MAZU meteorological warning system in their work.
The announcement was made during the meteorological sub-conference of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) and the High-Level Meeting on Global Artificial Intelligence Governance held in Shanghai, eastern China.
