China’s Xinjiang Development Seen as Model for Thailand’s Southern Border

Xinjiang:The rapid development of China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is being viewed as a significant advancement by Mr. Wan Muhammad Nor Matha, Chairman of the Prime Minister's Advisory Council and former Speaker of Parliament. He highlights that Muslims in Xinjiang now enjoy freedom and peace, a development that reflects positively on the region, much like the progress seen in Thailand's southern border provinces.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wannor has visited Xinjiang twice, first in 1998 and later in 2025, to assess the situation amidst claims of conflict and religious persecution. Contrary to these claims, he found Xinjiang to be peaceful and developed, with a happy population. The region's Muslim population, around 12 million, is larger than that of Thailand. Prominent Muslim leaders, including the governor and chairman of the Xinjiang National Assembly, hold significant positions, and there are eight Islamic universities offering free education and stipends.

Mr. Wannor noted the remarkable development in Xinjiang over the years, with significant improvements in infrastructure and industry. The airport, once small, has expanded significantly, and the region boasts numerous natural tourist attractions. He attributes some of this progress to President Xi Jinping's interest in Xinjiang, partly due to his father's role as a government official there. Mr. Wannor suggests that Thailand should enhance cooperation with Xinjiang, especially in trade and investment, to benefit both regions.

He also observed that China's approach to developing Xinjiang prioritizes security, which is crucial for the growth of tourism, industry, and education. Building trust and improving well-being were key strategies, resulting in a peaceful environment. Mr. Wannor emphasized the importance of continued vigilance against potential foreign interference while acknowledging the positive changes in Xinjiang.
