Commerce Ministry Partners with Thai Chamber and IMPACT to Elevate GI Products in Premium Market

Bangkok: The Department of Intellectual Property, in collaboration with the Thai Chamber of Commerce and IMPACT Muang Thong Thani, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to propel Thai Geographical Indication (GI) products into the premium market. This initiative is designed to bridge local producers with business networks and modern trade platforms, thereby increasing product value, distributing income to communities, and bolstering the grassroots economy sustainably.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Oramon Sapthaveetham, Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property, emphasized that GI products, known for their high quality and strong regional identity, are vital for enhancing competitiveness both domestically and internationally. She highlighted the importance of developing entrepreneurs in these regions to fully leverage GI for creating added value.

Thailand currently boasts registered GI products in all 77 provinces, totaling 252 products as of February 4, 2026. Notable examples include Marian plum from Nakhon Nayok province, pomelo from Nakhon Chai Si district, fragrant coconut from Sam Phran district, and milk jujube from Ban Phon, Kalasin province, all poised for commercial development.

Dr. Poj Aramwattananon, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Thai Chambers of Commerce, remarked that the collaboration brings together public and private sector strengths under the theme "Unlocking New Growth: New Potential for Growth." It aims to empower Thai entrepreneurs, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are crucial to the economic system. Upgraded domestic trade shows are expected to open avenues for trade, investment, and business networking at the international level, thereby boosting confidence and enhancing Thailand's long-term competitiveness.

Mr. Paul Kanchanapas, Chief Executive Officer of IMPACT Exhibition Management Co., Ltd., noted that GI products are not only indicative of quality and unique local traits but also serve as a significant tool for adding tangible value to the local economy.

IMPACT, as the country's largest exhibition and convention center, will facilitate space planning and expand distribution channels for GI products through its market network. Meanwhile, the Department of Intellectual Property will provide expertise on GI products, and the Thai Chamber of Commerce will leverage its business network to broaden market opportunities for entrepreneurs.

The collaboration is set to debut at the DigiTech ASEAN Thailand 2026 - AI Connect 2026, a prominent ASEAN technology and digital trade show and seminar, scheduled for July 22-24, 2026, at Halls 5-6, IMPACT Muang Thong Thani.

This strategic partnership marks a new trajectory for Thailand's economic development, aligning "local identity" with "modern markets" to foster balanced and sustainable long-term growth.
