Bangkok: Corrections Department Director-General reveals “Boonsong” meets criteria for suspended sentence, wears EM bracelet, general conditions: prohibited from traveling abroad, prohibited from political activities
Mr. Sahakarn Petcharin, Director-General of the Department of Corrections, mentioned the case of Mr. Boonsong Teriyapirom, former Minister of Commerce during the government of Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra, a prisoner in the rice-pledging case, who was granted a suspended sentence and temporary release from the Corrections Hospital today. He said that the committee considering the suspension of punishment considered allowing Mr. Boonsong to receive a temporary suspension of sentence because he met the normal criteria, which is to have served no less than two-thirds of his sentence according to the verdict.
According to Thai News Agency, the details of the prison release are not yet fully known. The responsibility for temporary release lies with the specific prison in charge. If the committee issues a
n order, the release can proceed without a court request. Post-release, the Probation Department must be contacted to take responsibility for Mr. Boonsong.
The conditions for release include restrictions such as not leaving the designated area, not traveling abroad, and not participating in political activities. In cases requiring an EM bracelet, the physical health of the individual receiving a suspended sentence is assessed to ensure it is suitable and does not cause additional health issues.
