Tunis:Ekniti Nitithanpraphas, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, has emphasized the country's potential to act as a "Trusted Connector" in a polarized global economy by enhancing investment transformation into national capabilities.
According to Thai News Agency, a high-level dialogue on "Building Resilience in a Fragmented World" took place, discussing the challenges of geopolitical polarization and strategies for countries to bolster resilience while maintaining economic openness. The dialogue featured prominent figures, including Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund; Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group; and Riikka Purra, Finland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.
Mr. Ekniti highlighted the shift in global economic thinking from efficiency to stability, impacting trade, finance, and investment. He pointed out Thailand's advantage from supply chain diversification, as evidenced by a 47% increase in foreign investment applications in early 2026. He stressed the importance of reducing bureaucratic hurdles to facilitate investment that leads to job creation and skill development for Thai people. In a polarized world, medium-sized economies like Thailand can bridge gaps by fostering trust and international cooperation. He also suggested ASEAN should enhance regional trade and digital infrastructure connections.
Ajay Banga discussed the evolution of trade dynamics, noting the shift towards developing countries trading among themselves and forming their own supply chains. He emphasized the World Bank's mission to inspire hope for future generations.
Kristalina Georgieva remarked on the symbolic use of Thai hand-woven fabrics in the meeting room, reflecting the inclusion of ordinary people's voices in global economic policy discussions. She urged participants to focus on cooperative efforts rather than conflicts.
Finland's Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the need for balanced risk targeting to build economic resilience. He noted Finland's strategic industrial capabilities and transition to clean energy as part of their approach to economic stability and interdependence.
