Bangkok:The Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) has organized a meeting with Surin and Udon Thani provinces to discuss delaying major sports events after severe flooding caused damage to essential sports equipment and bedding.
According to Thai News Agency, Surin Province is set to host the 42nd National Youth Games, "Surin Games," from March 14-25, 2027, and the 9th National Senior Games, "Muang Chang Games," from April 1-7, 2027. Meanwhile, Udon Thani Province is scheduled to host the 50th National Games, "Udon Thani Games," from May 9-19, 2027, and the 40th National Games for People with Disabilities, "Phu Phrabat Games," from June 3-9, 2027.
Heavy rainfall in Bangkok in late September 2026 led to flooding at Hua Mak Stadium, resulting in significant damage to stored sports equipment and athlete bedding. The equipment was rendered irreparable and potentially hazardous to athletes. As replacing these items will take 6-8 months, SAT has requested host provinces to postpone the competitions to ensure they proceed safely and efficiently.
Ms. Prodpran Samanmit, Governor of SAT, affirmed that the authority is actively addressing the issue and has invited representatives from the host provinces, provincial sports associations, and SAT to a meeting on October 21, 2026, at the SAT headquarters in Hua Mak. The aim is to find a viable solution for rescheduling the events. The SAT is committed to holding all qualifying and final rounds of the National Games within 2027.
Ms. Prodpran emphasized that the competitions are not canceled but under consideration for postponement, with a focus on meeting safety standards for athletes. The SAT will expedite the procurement of new equipment and is open to feedback from athletes, parents, and relevant stakeholders to ensure a consensus on the way forward.
