Government Halts Plans to Acquire 2026 World Cup Broadcast Rights Due to High Costs

Bangkok: Plans to purchase the broadcasting rights for the 2026 World Cup have been discontinued, as explained by Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office, citing excessive costs that could not be justified to the public.

According to Thai News Agency, Supamas addressed rumors regarding the government's reconsideration of acquiring the World Cup broadcasting rights. The Public Relations Department had engaged in discussions with both public and private sectors, including the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), as instructed by the government. However, shifting circumstances, such as the Middle East conflict, altered broadcast schedules, reduced opportunities for merchandise sales, and more challenging advertising conditions compared to previous tournaments, prompted the decision to shelve the plans.

Supamas also highlighted the exorbitant fee proposed by the International Federation of Football (FIFA) for the broadcasting rights. Although the exact amount remains undisclosed, the price was deemed disproportionately high. For a country like Thailand, with a population nearing 70 million, the costs were not feasible, especially when compared to nations with significantly larger populations and lower fees. This per capita disparity, ranging from 10 to 20 times, along with the current economic challenges facing Thailand, prompted the government to prioritize the well-being of its citizens. The absence of private sector sponsorship further compounded the issue. Supamas stated her intention to present this information to the Cabinet for further deliberation.

The government is exploring alternative options with FIFA, such as a paid viewing model or limited broadcasting of 5-10 minutes. While the details remain uncertain, there is hope that a private company might find a viable business opportunity, provided the costs are reasonable and publicly justifiable. Supamas emphasized the need for a fair price, suggesting that funds should be redirected if the terms are not favorable.

Regarding the project's indefinite suspension, Supamas reiterated the government's commitment to supporting the World Cup for its positive influence on youth. However, she acknowledged that the current investment may not be prudent and stressed the importance of evaluating each case on its merits. She urged patience until the Cabinet reaches a decision, with another press briefing anticipated soon.
