Government Promotes Udon Thani’s Silk Weave in Cabinet Meeting Attire

Udon Thani:The government is highlighting the charm of "Udon Thani's silk weave" by incorporating it into the shirts worn by cabinet ministers during the provincial meeting. This initiative aims to build upon traditional wisdom and create value for community products.

According to Thai News Agency, the deputy government spokesperson unveiled the ikat shirts that cabinet ministers will wear at the mobile cabinet meeting in Udon Thani Province, scheduled for November 2-3, 2026. These shirts are crafted from dark blue, naturally indigo-dyed fabric, showcasing patterns inspired by the Ban Chiang World Heritage site and lotus motifs, reflecting the weaving wisdom passed down through generations.

Captain Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, explained that during the meeting, the ministers will don shirts made from the unique Mhee Khid fabric of Udon Thani Province. These designs narrate local stories through the fabric patterns, demonstrating the beauty and historical significance of Thai wisdom, as well as the community's way of life.

The shirts are made using a four-heddle technique, creating a unique and dimensional pattern. The base fabric is sourced from the Dong Yang-Phon Phibun Indigo-Dyed Ikat Weaving Community Enterprise in Phibun Rak District. The shirts are further adorned with Khid silk fabric, incorporating significant provincial patterns in a meaningful manner.

Two distinct patterns highlight Udon Thani's heritage and natural beauty. The "Ban Chiang pottery pattern" reflects the historical and cultural value linked to the Ban Chiang World Heritage Site, while the "lotus flower pattern" symbolizes abundance and local identity, particularly the Red Lotus Sea in Kumphawapi District, a key tourist attraction.

The Khid silk fabric is known for its intricate weaving process, employing the "khid" or "dok" technique with 58 warp threads, alternating with ikat dyeing and natural indigo dye. It is produced by the Ban Non Kok Ancient Weaving Group in Nong Na Kham Subdistrict, which serves as a learning center and production hub for hand-woven fabrics.

The design of the ikat clothing for this cabinet meeting is a collaboration between Udon Thani Province and the Creative Design and Textile Center of Udon Thani Rajabhat University. This collaboration applies cultural heritage to contemporary use, showcasing local products and craftsmanship to a broader audience.

The Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister highlighted that including Khid silk fabric in the meeting attire not only showcases the province's identity but also reflects the value of local wisdom and Thai weavers' skills. Preserving traditional woven fabrics contributes to creating present-day value and opportunities for community products, fostering sustainable regional development.

During the meeting, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul instructed ministers to prioritize the welfare of farmers in the Northeast and other regions. Proposed development projects will focus on agriculture, food, drug control, border trade development, and tourism.
