Bangkok: The government has announced plans to extend the appeals period and review eligibility criteria for the state welfare card system, ensuring that individuals in genuine need are not excluded from receiving benefits. This move comes as part of a broader effort to listen to public concerns and improve the system's fairness and efficiency.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, stated that the government is committed to updating the welfare card criteria to accurately identify and support impoverished individuals. The review aims to include over 2.3 million previously overlooked individuals, following data that had not been updated in over 4-5 years.
Ms. Rachada emphasized the government's responsiveness to public feedback, particularly regarding fraudulent benefit claims. Efforts are underway to enhance the appeals process, making it more accessible and just. This includes extending the appeals deadline and gathering factual information from the public to ensure a thorough evaluation of eligibility.
The Ministry of Finance is working on revising regulations to better capture the living conditions of citizens. Discussions with the Ministry of Transport are focusing on fair guidelines, such as considering the ownership of older vehicles.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Interior has set up one-stop service centers in every district office for identity verification, rights review requests, and fact-checking. Individuals who suspect misuse of their personal data can seek a review of their eligibility, and legal action will be taken against fraudulent activities.
Ms. Rachada concluded by highlighting the government's ongoing commitment to refining the welfare system, ensuring that assistance is more targeted and aligned with current circumstances. Citizens can also access over 72 other welfare benefits, including allowances for the elderly, people with disabilities, and educational support.
