Hailstorm Causes Panic in Bangkok Neighborhoods

Bangkok:Residents in the Ratchada-Ladprao, Soi Suea Yai, and Chokchai 4 areas of Bangkok experienced panic as hailstones fell, according to reports shared on social media.

According to Thai News Agency, the “Verify Before Sharing” center confirmed the hailstorm with the Meteorological Department. The hail occurred due to the transition from the rainy season to the winter season, which results in hot and humid weather. This weather pattern causes rain clouds to form at high altitudes, where water droplets freeze and fall as hail.

Hailstones are ice chunks that form in large thunderstorm clouds. The process involves updrafts carrying water droplets to freezing temperatures, causing them to clump and layer until they fall to the ground. Hail is common in Thailand during the summer months, particularly during seasonal transitions.

Hailstones can cause significant damage to buildings, crops, and pose dangers to individuals. They can damage roofs, shatter windows, and harm agricultural crops. People can also suffer injuries if struck by hailstones, and road conditions can become hazardous.

To protect against hail damage, it is advised to seek shelter indoors, avoid glass, and park vehicles under sturdy cover. Farmers should consider protective measures like shade nets and crop insurance.

Common misconceptions about hail include the belief that it only occurs in winter or that it can be eaten. In reality, hail is more likely during hot weather and is not safe to consume due to pollutants. Additionally, hail and snow are formed through different processes, with hail occurring in thunderstorm clouds due to strong updrafts.
