Yala: Intense clashes erupted behind Lam Mai Police Station in Yala Province, where security has been raised to the highest level. Gunmen attacked the station, resulting in a fierce gunfight as security forces retaliated.
According to Thai News Agency, at approximately 7:57 AM, an unknown group of assailants, armed with unidentified firearms, opened fire on the area behind the Lam Mai Police Station in Lam Mai Subdistrict, Mueang Yala District, Yala Province. The area, consisting of rubber plantations and dense forest, became a battleground as police officers from the station, who were on duty inside, quickly regrouped and returned fire in self-defense and to secure the station. The gunfight lasted several minutes before the assailants, familiar with the area, managed to flee.
Later, Pol. Maj. Gen. Wallop Chamnong-Arsa, Deputy Commander of Provincial Police Region 9, along with relevant officials, arrived at the scene and ordered the area secured. Once the situation began to calm down and the gunfire subsided, security personnel, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, forensic officers from Yala Police Station 10, and the Mae Ko Niao Yala rescue team cordoned off the area to conduct a safety inspection. They examined bullet trajectories, collected spent shell casings, and meticulously gathered evidence for the investigation and pursuit of the perpetrators. Initial checks revealed no police officers or civilians were injured or killed.
Reports indicate that security forces have issued an urgent order to all police stations and related agencies in the area to raise security measures to the highest level. This includes intensifying checks on all individuals and vehicles passing through checkpoints and security roadblocks, and ordering all units to be fully prepared to prevent any further incidents or complications that may occur.
The Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward Headquarters requests the cooperation of the public to avoid traveling to or approaching the area of the incident until the situation is resolved. Officials believe the attack was aimed at creating unrest and instilling fear in the area.
