Iran Urges BRICS to Condemn US and Israel at Summit

New delhi: Iran has called on the BRICS group to officially denounce the United States and Israel, urging the coalition to address what it describes as violations of international law. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi specifically highlighted what Iran perceives as unwarranted acts of aggression against it.

According to Thai News Agency, Araghchi made this appeal during the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Summit held in New Delhi, India. His comments underscored existing tensions within the recently expanded group, as the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran emerged as a significant topic of contention. The inclusion of Iran and the United Arab Emirates-two regional rivals-further complicates the group's ability to reach consensus on related issues.

Araghchi criticized the United States, labeling its actions as an illegal expansion of power and akin to a declaration of war. Despite these strong words, he emphasized Iran's willingness to engage in diplomatic efforts while also affirming its readiness to defend itself if necessary.

The Iranian minister urged BRICS members and the international community to collectively condemn the actions of the United States and Israel, which Iran views as clear violations of international law.

Iran's position could hinder the BRICS group from issuing a joint statement, as unanimity is required among all member states, including the UAE, which has been at odds with Iran due to multiple regional conflicts.

The BRICS group, which originally included Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded its ranks by incorporating South Africa in 2011 and more recently adding Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. This expansion has elevated its global significance but has also introduced more internal disagreements on geopolitical matters. India holds the rotating presidency of BRICS this year.
