Japanese Government Poised for Landslide Victory in Upcoming Elections

Tokyo: Opinion polls in Japan indicate that the ruling party will win a landslide victory in this week’s House of Representatives elections. A poll by the Asahi newspaper suggests that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is likely to secure an overwhelming victory in the upcoming general election on Sunday, February 8th.

According to Thai News Agency, the LDP is expected to increase its seats from 198 to more than 233 out of 465 in the House of Representatives. Together with its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, the government could achieve a total of 300 seats, ensuring a solid majority compared to its current 233-seat hold.

The largest opposition party, the centrist Reform Alliance, might face significant losses, potentially reducing its presence from 167 to 84 seats. A decisive win for the LDP would bolster the Takaichi government’s position, likely enabling it to implement its fiscal policies, such as suspending the 8% tax on food sales for two years. Meanwhile, other opposition parties are also considering policies aimed at reducing taxes to help citizens manage high living costs.
