Tokyo: Japanese prosecutors have decided to drop drug charges against a Thai woman known as "Nong Thien" and are preparing to deport her back to Thailand. The Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) is actively investigating the broader drug trafficking network associated with the case.
According to Thai News Agency, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) spokesperson announced the latest updates on the case involving the Thai national detained in Japan. The charges were dismissed following a review of the evidence, which was deemed insufficient to establish her involvement in drug-related activities. Preparations for her extradition to Thailand are underway to facilitate further investigation into the network.
Ms. Areephak Ngernbamrung, Deputy Secretary-General and spokesperson for the ONCB, detailed the situation surrounding the Thai woman, initially detained on drug trafficking charges. The Japanese prosecutors' decision to dismiss the case came after a thorough examination of the evidence.
The woman is currently undergoing deportation processing with the Japanese Immigration Bureau. Upon her return to Thailand, the ONCB, in collaboration with the Narcotics Suppression Division 3 (NSD 3), plans to resume the investigation to identify and prosecute employers, accomplices, and other parties involved in the illicit network.
The ONCB spokesperson highlighted the case as a cautionary tale for those who carry goods or luggage for international travelers, warning against becoming unwitting participants in transnational organized crime. Even if individuals are not directly involved in drug trafficking, they may still face legal repercussions in foreign countries.
Additionally, the ONCB emphasized that smuggling goods by circumventing customs procedures constitutes a violation under Section 242 of the Customs Act B.E. 2560 (2017), punishable by severe penalties. The spokesperson advised individuals to thoroughly verify the origin of items and the identities of those hiring them, as failure to do so could lead to significant legal and personal consequences.
The ONCB is working with relevant agencies to explore legal measures under Thai law against smuggling offenses, aiming to strengthen enforcement, close loopholes in drug trafficking networks, and prevent Thailand from being exploited as a transit hub for international drug smuggling.
