Bangkok: Korda-U is aiming for a hat-trick of major championships this year at the AIG Women's Open in England. The AIG Women's Open, the fifth and final women's major golf tournament of the year, is set to begin next week at Royal Lytham and St Annes in England. Two stars, Nelly Korda and Harun Yu, the world's number one and number three ranked female golfers respectively, will be vying for a hat-trick of major championships after each winning two titles in the 2026 season.
According to Thai News Agency, from the four major tournaments held so far this year, Nelly Korda, the world number one from the United States, and Haeran Yu, the world number three from South Korea, have alternated in dominance on the major circuit. They are the only two golfers to have won more than one major championship this season.
Starting with Nelly Korda, the 27-year-old golfer, who showcased exceptional form at Memorial Park to win the Chevron Championship, the first major of the year, in April. She finished five strokes ahead of Ruo Ningyin, a strong player from China, marking the largest margin of victory over a runner-up in a Chevron tournament in 18 years.
Although Korda won the Chevron Championship relatively easily, the situation at the US Women's Open, the second major of the year, at Riviera Country Club in June was much more difficult. After trailing by seven strokes in the first round, Korda staged a remarkable comeback, scoring two consecutive 67s to bring her back into contention. She then sank a three-foot putt on the final hole to save par under immense pressure, securing her second major of the season and beating Charley Hull and Gaby Lopez by just one stroke.
This victory also marks Korda's fourth major title, bringing her just one more to achieve a Grand Slam and two more to win all the majors (Super Slam). She has a strong chance of making history in golf at the AIG Women's Open, the final major of the year, at Royal Lytham and St Annes later this month.
Meanwhile, 25-year-old golfer Haeran Yoo won her first major at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, the third major of the year, at Hazeltine National Golf Club in June. She came from 10 strokes behind first-round leader Ina Yoon to ultimately defeat her compatriot. Furthermore, Yoo became the seventh player since 1990 to win every season during her first four years on the LPGA Tour.
Following that was the fourth major of the year, the Evian Championship, at the Evian Resort Golf Club in mid-July. Yu not only won her second major title but also made history by winning her second major in just two weeks, after narrowly defeating the in-form Brooke Henderson in a playoff.
The fifth and final major tournament of the year, the 50th edition of the AIG Women's Open, will be held at Royal Lytham and St Annes in England from July 30th to August 2nd, with a total prize pool of US$10 million (approximately 336 million baht). Nelly Korda and Harun Yu are both vying for a hat-trick of third major titles, along with over 140 other players from around the world hoping to engrave their names in the history of this prestigious major championship.
