Narathiwat: The recent landslide behind Betong Municipality in Yala Province has resulted in significant vehicular damage, with officials successfully removing five cars from the site. The landslide, which occurred in the parking area behind the new Betong Municipality Office building, initially trapped more than ten vehicles. In a bid to prevent further disasters, authorities have cordoned off the affected area with steel panels and prohibited all types of vehicles from entering. The entrance has been blocked from an intersection 500 meters away, as onlookers were attempting to access the site, raising concerns of additional risks.
According to Thai News Agency, the region is also grappling with severe flooding, affecting all 13 districts of Narathiwat Province. The persistent rainfall has caused the three main rivers, including the Su-ngai Kolok River, to overflow their banks, exacerbating the situation. The Muno Irrigation Project officials detected a leak in the water wall, prompting immediate action to
reinforce it with large bags to prevent further flooding in the Muno Market area, which has been inundated twice before.
In Ra-Ngae District, the rapid water flow has eroded the bridge neck at Khlong Huai Chu Sing, leading to its collapse. This has resulted in traffic being rerouted through alternative routes, impacting the daily commute of villagers. Meanwhile, the Su-ngai Kolok Rescue Foundation has been actively evacuating monks and villagers using flat-bottomed boats and jet skis, despite the challenging conditions posed by strong water currents.
Tragically, the floods have also claimed the life of a 2-year-old girl in Ban Padangyo, Amphoe Su-ngai Kolok. The child fell into the water and was carried away, later being found and rushed to Su-ngai Kolok Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. This heartbreaking incident highlights the severity of the flooding and the urgent need for continued rescue efforts.
