Paris: The director of France's Louvre Museum has resigned, months after a shocking burglary in which robbers stole numerous jewels from the world's most visited museum. The statement also emphasized that the Louvre needs calm and a strong new impetus to continue important projects related to enhancing security and modernizing the museum under the new director to be appointed.
According to Thai News Agency, this resignation is a direct consequence of the shocking burglary last October, when four thieves disguised as construction workers used a cherry picker to reach the balcony of the Galerie d'Apollon exhibition area, then used a circular saw to cut through a window and steal jewels in just 4-8 minutes. The thieves stole eight pieces of jewelry with an estimated total value of approximately £88 million, or about 3.221 billion baht. During their escape, the gang dropped Empress Eug©nie's Crown on the street in front of the museum. Although the crown was damaged by being crushed, it is still in a condition that can be repaired.
Following the incident, De Gas immediately submitted her resignation, which was initially rejected. However, pressure intensified due to a cumulative total of several factors, including security system failures-an investigation revealed serious flaws such as incorrectly positioned exterior security cameras, malfunctioning alarm systems in some areas, outdated museum infrastructure, and insufficient investment in security. Much of the budget had been diverted to new art acquisitions. Simultaneously, the Louvre faced a decade-long ticket fraud scandal causing over £10 million in damages, a water leak damaging valuable books, and employee strikes over poor working conditions.
Degas made history as the first woman to hold the position of director of the Louvre Museum in 2021. During her tenure, she pushed for limits on the number of visitors per day to reduce overcrowding and focused on exhibitions that were more closely related to contemporary history.
