Bangkok: MEA warns of thunderstorms from May 14-18 and advises checking electrical systems for safety. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) has issued a warning to residents in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan to prepare for severe weather conditions following the Meteorological Department's forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall from May 14-18, 2026. The advisory highlights potential hazards such as flash floods and landslides, urging the public to ensure their electrical systems are secure and functioning properly.
According to Thai News Agency, MEA's Director of Corporate Communications, Mr. Thadthep Wannawichit, emphasized the importance of electrical safety in light of the incoming volatile weather. MEA has mobilized a team of technicians and engineers to maintain the stability of the electrical system around the clock. The authority also offers guidance on preventing electrical accidents during the rainy season, stressing the need for immediate repairs to any damaged equipment and the installation of safety devices like Residual Current Devices (RCDs).
Residents are advised to inspect their electrical equipment, ensure the integrity of their wiring, and cut off power supplies if floodwaters reach electrical outlets. Caution is also recommended around large billboards, trees, and metal structures during thunderstorms to avoid electrical hazards.
For any observed damage or risks relating to MEA's electrical infrastructure, residents can report issues 24/7 via Line: MEA Connect (@MEAthailand) or through the MEA Call Center at 1130. Additional updates and information about MEA services are accessible at www.mea.or.th.
