Ministry of Education and Agriculture Reverses Sugar Price Hike Decision

Bangkok: The Ministry of Education has cancelled the announcement to increase sugar prices after the Prime Minister expressed concern about the impact on local residents and shops. This decision comes after the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MOC) also withdrew its earlier announcement regarding the sugar price hike.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, Government Spokesperson, stated that Mr. Bai Noi Suwanchatri, Secretary-General of the Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB), had initially issued an announcement on November 7, 2025, to increase the domestic sugar price. This increase was intended for calculating the price of cane and the return on sugar production and sales for the 2025/2026 production season, raising it by an additional 3 baht per kilogram. However, following concerns over the impact on local consumers and the government’s commitment to reducing living costs, this announcement was revoked.

Reporters indicated that after the initial announcement on November 7th, it was apparent that the price hike would affect consumer prices and oppose the government’s “Quick Big Win” policy. This policy aims to alleviate the cost of living for the populace. Consequently, the Teachers’ Council of Thailand (TOT) was instructed to retract the price increase announcement.

Prior to the cancellation, the Sugar Board had declared an increase in sugar prices: white granulated sugar was to rise to 24 baht per kilogram from the previous 21 baht, and refined white sugar was set to increase to 25 baht per kilogram from the previous 22 baht. These changes were scheduled to take effect from November 8, 2025.
