Bangkok:The Ministry of Justice has reassured the public that inmates are safe despite ongoing floods, though visits have been temporarily suspended. Efforts are underway to prepare sandbags for vulnerable areas.
According to Thai News Agency, the Minister of Justice, Police Lieutenant General Ruddhaphol Naowarat, has ordered rigorous monitoring of prisons in flood-affected regions. Special attention is on the Lat Yao prison complex in Bangkok, where the situation is reportedly under control with inmates remaining safe. Visits are not permitted at present to ensure safety.
Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, stated that there are proactive measures in line with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s directive to expedite flood assistance. This includes mobilizing equipment and personnel to assist the public in high-risk zones.
The Lat Yao Prison complex is actively managing floodwaters, with officials working continuously to pump and drain water. Inmates are receiving necessary supplies, including food and hygiene products, and family visits have been halted until further notice.
Efforts extend beyond Bangkok, with prisons in Nakhon Nayok and Ang Thong provinces preparing sandbags. The Nakhon Nayok Provincial Prison participated in a volunteer initiative to fortify The Royal Lagoon Village against potential flooding. Similarly, the Ang Thong Provincial and Sala Daeng Temporary Prisons have mobilized to create sandbag reserves for emergency use.
Ms. Lalida emphasized the importance of readiness, highlighting that all relevant agencies are equipped and prepared to act promptly in response to any escalation of the flooding situation.
