Bangkok: The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has confirmed that the recent earthquake in Myanmar has not impacted any major dams in Thailand; all remain structurally sound and safe.
According to Thai News Agency, the earthquake, which occurred on May 18, 2026, near the southern coast of Myanmar, registered a magnitude of 5.3 at 09:05, followed by a magnitude 3.2 at 09:18, and a magnitude 2.7. Despite the proximity to fault lines, EGAT immediately assessed its significant dams, including the Bhumibol Dam in Tak province, Sirikit Dam in Uttaradit province, Vajiralongkorn and Srinakarin Dams in Kanchanaburi provinces, Ratchaprapha Dam in Surat Thani province, and Bang Lang Dam in Yala province. All dams remain unaffected by the seismic activity.
The major dams operated by EGAT are engineered to endure earthquakes with accelerations ranging from 0.1 to 0.2 g. Their structural integrity is regularly monitored using internationally standardized dam monitoring instruments. EGAT assures the public of the resilience and safety of these structures. For updates on safety alerts and water management, the EGAT ONE application is available for both iOS and Android devices.
