Bangkok: The National Human Rights Commission issued a statement calling for respect for human dignity in the case of the incident in Soi Ramkhamhaeng 53. Thousands of Muslim citizens protested against "Madame Ram 53," a LGBTQ+ TikToker, for her actions that were perceived as disrespectful to Islam and mocking the Quran. The protest led to live streams that incited emotions and pressured the TikToker to shave her head as an apology.
According to Thai News Agency, the National Human Rights Commission affirmed that all individuals have the freedom of religion and expression. However, such expression, especially in public spaces, must respect the beliefs and faith of people of all religions. Insulting or demeaning any religion is a violation of the rights of others, guaranteed both under the law and human rights principles. Additionally, no one deserves to be punished beyond the bounds of the law or coerced into performing any act that violates the right to life and physical integrity, as well as human dignity.
The National Human Rights Commission highlighted that Thai society is multicultural, with diverse thoughts, beliefs, religions, and gender identities. The commission emphasized that public figures and people on social media should exercise caution when discussing sensitive issues that could lead to hatred, division, and violence. Such actions are detrimental to coexistence based on respect for the rights of others and the principle of peace, which is a core value of all religions.
