Natthapong Reaffirms Surapol’s Role as Appropriate Chairman of Bangkok’s Strategic Committee

Bangkok: "Natthapong" affirms that "Surapol" is the appropriate chairman of Bangkok's strategic committee, emphasizing his role in overseeing Bangkok's policies without involvement in party decisions. He also addressed his potential candidacy for Bangkok Governor and the criticism from academics, highlighting the importance of attracting dissenting voices to oppose the "blue" regime. When questioned about whether the "orange" party created this situation, he noted the unpredictability of election outcomes.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, a party-list MP and leader of the People's Party, responded to criticism regarding Mr. Surapol Nitikraipoj's appointment as chairman of the strategic advisory committee for the People's Party's gubernatorial team. He highlighted that both he and other party executives have explained the rationale behind Mr. Surapol's appointment, and therefore, sees no need for further elaboration. Mr. Surapol, a former Rector of Thammasat University, has also provided his explanations, clarifying his unchanged principles amid criticism.

Mr. Nattapong emphasized the People's Party's principles, stating their opposition to coups d'©tat and the need for supreme power to belong to the people. He acknowledged that political paths may differ, but Mr. Surapol's role is to advise on Bangkok's administration, leveraging his insights and perspectives from his television programs. Despite differing political stances, Mr. Surapol's advisory role does not involve decision-making within the party, easing concerns about potential conflicts.

Addressing concerns about the People's Party working with Mr. Surapol, given his past stance, Mr. Nattapong urged a focus on the broader context of monopolized power in Thai politics. He emphasized the need to expand coalitions and include those with differing views to overcome the monopolistic "blue" regime. He acknowledged criticisms from academics like Mr. Pavin Chachavalpongpun but stressed the aim to break the color-coded political system while maintaining the party's identity.

Regarding the People's Party's role in potentially creating the "blue regime," Mr. Nattapong pointed out the unpredictability of the election results on February 8th. He cited issues like civil servant transfers and vote counting discrepancies as factors beyond their control. The party's decision to support Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul as Prime Minister was seen as a step towards constitutional amendments necessary for improved Thai politics.

Mr. Nattapong addressed perceptions of the People's Party's investigations as symbolic, affirming ongoing efforts in cases like the Khao Kradong land issue. He also responded to comments by Mr. Piyabutr Saengkanokkul, reiterating their working principles and understanding differing opinions on Mr. Surapol's appointment.

In response to whether Mr. Surapol's role would be reviewed, Mr. Nattapong maintained that his chairmanship of strategic policy implementation for Bangkok is appropriate, given his knowledge and lack of involvement in major party decisions. He acknowledged the need for improved processes within the party to balance experienced personnel and those with opposing viewpoints.

Finally, Mr. Nattapong confirmed the invitation extended to Mr. Surapol to run for Bangkok Governor, emphasizing the importance of candidates with experience and a deep understanding of Bangkok's structural issues. He assured continuity in improving bureaucratic systems while addressing major challenges like the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Act and public health issues, requiring coordinated efforts and a strong stance against wrongdoing.
