Bangkok: Personal information of Anutin leaked online; Siripong is investigating; and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society is preparing to sue under the Computer Crime Act. According to Thai News Agency, a major data and vehicle registration information leak has occurred at the Department of Land Transport, releasing personal and vehicle registration data to the public. In addition to the registration information of ordinary citizens, the leak also included data on a Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended, license plate ?? 9999 Bangkok, belonging to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Deputy Minister of Transport, Siriapong Angkasakulkiat, has immediately coordinated with the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) to investigate the matter. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE) is preparing to file a lawsuit under Section 7 of the Computer Crime Act for the unauthorized dissemination of this information.
This incident stems from a post by Mr. Nithikorn Boonyakulcharoen, a former candidate for Member of Parliament on the People's Party's party-list, warning about a website offering access to personal information from vehicle registration numbers. Subsequently, Mr. Thanarat Kuawattanaphan, CEO of DomeCloud, a software and blockchain expert, posted a further warning, stating that the leaked data was highly detailed, including passport photos, 13-digit national identification numbers, dates of birth, and registered addresses. Criminals could then use this information to create fake ID cards for illegal transactions.
Furthermore, online evidence has emerged showing that this search system is being offered for commercial use, such as daily rentals at 350 baht or monthly API access at 2,500 baht, for searching names, surnames, and national identification numbers. Mr. Thanarat therefore urged those in authority and regulatory bodies under the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) to expedite the enforcement of the law to prevent widespread harm to the public.
