Sa Kaeo: Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, has called for patience and tolerance from both Thailand and Cambodia concerning ongoing border disputes in Sa Kaeo Province. The appeal comes after reports of Cambodian soldiers constructing shelters in a contested area, contrary to the terms set out in MOU43. Mr. Phumtham emphasized the importance of not perceiving the situation as overly concerning, acknowledging the complex nature of border issues due to differing maps and overlapping territorial claims.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham highlighted that peaceful negotiations are essential, as each nation views the disputed territories as their own. He stressed the necessity for dialogue in preventing the escalation of tensions, noting that impulsive actions could lead to war and violence. Mr. Phumtham underscored that the issue is not yet critical and that diplomatic discussions through established committees should continue.
In addressing whether the Cambodian soldiers' actions could be deemed provocative, Mr. Phumtham advised against such interpretations, warning that it could lead to unnecessary conflict. He pointed out that both countries should protect their sovereignty without escalating to armed confrontations. Historical precedents of handling similar encroachments through protest letters and negotiations were cited as preferable approaches.
Mr. Phumtham also urged all parties involved in similar global disputes, such as those in the South China Sea, Ukraine-Russia, and Israel-Hamas, to pursue peaceful resolutions. He reiterated Thailand's commitment to avoiding warfare and emphasized the broader implications of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
