Bangkok: "Prasert" is set to propose to the Cabinet a revision of the "poor person's card" criteria, specifically aiming to remove restrictions affecting students from the Social Security Office. Minister of Education, Mr. Prasert Chantharawongthong, expressed his intent to unlock and restore student rights at the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) during a briefing at Government House. This proposal is particularly focused on students in non-formal education under the Department of Learning Extension (DLE), who have been forced to withdraw from studies to avail benefits under the State Welfare Card project.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Prasert confirmed his plans to present the issue at the upcoming Cabinet meeting, seeking to expedite the reconsideration of the current screening criteria. The goal is to introduce more flexibility and targeted assistance for students in the vocational education system, which comprises over 200,000 individuals nationwide. These students represent a range of ages and are considered a vulnerable group needing state protection.
Mr. Prasert had previously discussed the issue with key figures, including Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul and Mr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, during a visit to the People's Republic of China. Further discussions on the matter are expected to take place soon. The Ministry of Education is actively encouraging students who have dropped out to reapply, emphasizing that no student should be excluded from the education system due to welfare conditions. The government aims to reassure the public of its commitment to resolving the issue, protecting educational rights, and facilitating a swift return to normal education for affected students.
